What is Coaching?

I often get this question, and so I want to take the moment to break down what coaching is and isn’t. I will use an analogy of a child learning to ride a bicycle.  When a child is learning to rife a bicycle they have a hard time riding because they are not able to balance and thus they fall. To learn to ride the bicycle, this child has several options. She can go to the person who we call a consultant. The consultant will look at the bike, and write a manual that provides standard operating procedures to ride a bicycle. They can go to the therapist. The therapist will look at the child and ask them what was their relationship with the bike before. They will try to find out if there was previous trauma or issues preventing them from riding the bicycle. Lastly, they can go to the coach. The coach will look at BOTH the bicycle and the child, talk to the child about their hopes and dreams to ride the bicycle, tell the child to hop on while the coach holds the handlebars while the child pedals until they are comfortable with the coach letting go.

This is the job of the Coach. We take a look at the whole person. Everything about them and their life; their hopes, dreams, passions and desires. The coach is right there with the person every step of the way, guiding them, empowering them, and championing them until they are able to hold their own. It is the belief of the coach that every person is naturally creative, resourceful and whole and has full choice in their life!

Yes! We do coach children. We have our Goal Girl non-profit where we work with young girls aged 12 – 17 years old. Please inquire about this program if you have a child that would like coaching.

Relationship, Team and Group Coaching has a minimum of 2 people and a max of 30 people. Over 30 people would be considered organization coaching and you would discuss a different package option.

As an ICF certified coach, I am held to the highest standards of confidentiality. Examples of confidentiality are an employee is offered coaching by her boss and is concerned about the coach sharing information with her boss or vice versa. My confidentiality agreement is that there will be no sharing of information. The only circumstances where confidentiality will be broken is if there is potential harm to the client or another person.
